Introducing Your Host Mike Johnston

Mike Johnston, an 'avid birder' who has specialized in birding in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the land of his birth.

Credentials:

Mike is a registered South African Tourist Guide, specializing in birding and wildlife safaris & tours.

A member of many years’ standing with Birdlife South Africa, and Birdlife Port Natal (formerly Natal Bird Club)

Mike participated in both the South African Bird Atlas Project (1987- 1991) and the Birds in Reserves Project (1995-1996) organized by the Avian Demography Unit of the University of Cape Town and South African Ornithological Society.

Mike has considerable experience and knowledge of the major game and nature reserves in KZN and their resident bird populations.

Mike is a co-partner of Umzinyathi Safaris, and is equally at home in the South African bushveld undertaking either "big game" or "birding" safaris. Mike has been organizing and undertaking safaris and tours for overseas clients as a registered Tourist Guide since 1995, and his competence extends to include other fields such as wildlife, cultural or other general tours throughout KZN.

A LAST "CHIRP" from MIKE: "
" I am aware that I will encounter many clients (and have already) whose knowledge and expertise in this exciting field far exceeds that of my own. However as a tour guide and a keen birder I understand the needs of ‘birders’ and I appreciate the different techniques that need to be applied in organizing and conducting successful birding safaris. I am very familiar with most of the game and nature reserves in KZN."
