Gill and I enjoyed a swift overnight visit to the Riverside
Lodge at Umsuluzi Game Park in early April 2004.
The weather was great - a typically warm autumn day, cooling
slightly in the evening. We contentedly reflected over the
day as we enjoyed a sun-downer next to the glowing fire barbeque
just above the rapids of the Bloukrans River running immediately
below our thatch-on-stone cottage.
Although our visit had not been intended as a ‘birding
break', the tranquility of Umsuluzi and the sounds of the
resident bird-life were compelling and eventually prevailed
over other matters. We decided to spend a little time doing
some ‘casual birding', and at the end of a couple of
hours we had "ticked" nearly 50 species without
even really trying. Umsuluzi Game Park has a wealth of bird-life,
and we couldn't resist the opportunity.
The staff at the Riverside Lodge made us feel very welcome
with their warm hospitality - thanks to Lara (front of house
and host), Tamyln (activities co-ordinator and guide), and
Irene and Teshane (chefs).
We can't wait to return !
